I was recently reading this article where a fellow marketer details roughly how much content it would take to produce a six figure income solely from blogging and display ads. While the author states that these estimates are extremely rough, it got me thinking about how much content I produce. In that article he puts the word count at roughly 1,280,000 based on roughly 1600 words per article, and that inspired me to create this challenge. During the next year, I’ve made it my goal to produce at least 1,000,000 words of content across the various sites I run.
Now, I decided to round down to 1,000,000 since that has a better ring to it, but I think the overall idea of getting into the habit of creating that much content is more the point. The idea is that even if I miss the goal, I’ll still end up with significantly more content than I would have if I had not tried.
If we do the math (and assuming a standard 365 year) we get about 2740 words per day. That actually seems a lot more doable, and I’ve certainly had days where I’ve hit more words than that. Breaking it down makes it seem that much more doable.
During the next year, I’ll be posting updates on my progress. I’m thinking monthly makes the most sense, so be on the lookout for that.

Keys To Success
In order to hit this goal I have a couple of things to keep in mind. These are key elements that are going to make or break my ability to stay consistent throughout the year.
Having Lots of Content Ideas
I have a large backlog for all of my sites of article ideas. While I probably don’t have enough to hit the 1 million word mark, I would say I currently have enough to get about halfway there. That helps a ton, and lets me focus more on writing.
Overshooting As Much as Possible
I’m also looking to overshoot that 2740 daily word goal as much as possible. I’m sure there will be weekends or vacations where I write a lot less, and I want to be sure that a few low count days don’t put me too far off track.
Having a Dedicated Writing Time
I’ve set up some time every morning to just write. While I think I’ll probably need to supplement this later in the day, this big burst in the morning is going to get a good chunk of my writing out of the way early.
